Anaheim Pepper

What You May Want to Know About the Anaheim Pepper

The Anaheim pepper is a Chile pepper but it is actually milder than a Chile.  You may have heard it called a California Chile by individuals that enjoy them on a more regular basis.  The degree of heat in the pepper is often going to depend on where it was grown and how mature it actually is.  For example, if the Anaheim pepper was grown in Mexico, it is going to be hotter than if it was grown in California.  This is interesting to know because if you want something that is hotter, you will look for those that have been grown in Mexico.

You may notice that the Anaheim pepper often ranges in color from light green to red.  What is interesting to know is that the more mature the pepper is the redder it is going to be.  You can find these in the produce section of your grocery store and you will be able to tell how mature it is by the color of it.  You are going to want to look for a pepper that is firm and it does not looked wrinkled or bruised.  You will want to store them in the refrigerator for approximately one week if you keep them in a plastic bag.  You could also place them into a plastic bag and put them into the freezer where they will stay for a year.

When you are ready to use the Anaheim pepper you will want to wash it off in cool water and then cut the seeds and the vein out of it.  This is done in order to make the pepper less hot.  If you want it to be really hot, you can leave the veins and the seeds in it.  However, keep in mind that this pepper is most often enjoyed when it is still green and it is a little bit milder than other hot Chile peppers.  Either way, it is very important to wash your hands when you are done messing with this pepper.  You want to be sure that you do not have any of the juice from the pepper on your fingers that may get into your eyes.

Another interesting cooking tip for the Anaheim pepper that you will want to keep in mind is the fact that the skin is often peeled off of the pepper before it is used.  The easiest way to do that is to take the pepper and place it over an open flame, or placing them into the oven on broil, until the skin on the pepper is starting to turn black.  At that point, you will want to let them cool and then remove the peel from the pepper.

If you are the type of person that really enjoys adding spice to your food, this may be an interesting way to do it.  The Anaheim pepper can be used in numerous dishes ranging from egg omelets to stews and soup.  If you can dream it, you can add it.  Some people will even use this pepper in homemade salsa as a way to add a little bit of heat.  Remember that if you want to add more than a little bit of heat you can purchase red peppers rather than green peppers.  You can also leave the seeds and veins in your salsa for an added kick.  Many people enjoy adding these peppers to salads or sandwiches to add flavor and spice.  They are really easy to prepare as long as you remember to remove the skins and wash your hands when you are finished touching them.  This is also very important if you have a small child.  Do not let them touch the peppers and then touch their eyes.  It can be very painful for them if you do.
