It can be a wonderful thing that each individual is diverse from the next, but can also present quite a challenge when attempting to promote an attitude of teamwork. Motivation for one person can vastly differ from another, making it difficult yet not impossible to render this type of consensus in any type of group endeavor.
It all begins with a goal
Everything in life is achieved through setting a goal or having a mission. Getting a good job means acquiring the proper skills and education; buying a house means obtaining funds to pay for it; succeeding in business means profitability and the object of a sport is to win. Achieving these goals does not occur by accident, but rather by deciding on the manpower, tools and skills required to obtain them and then gathering all resources together to accomplish the goal.
Some goals are quite personal, such as getting ahead in one’s career, for example. A great many others, however, require a group effort. A sport such as basketball, baseball or soccer means that a number of people must coordinate each of their individual efforts toward one shared goal: winning the game. For this to be successful, each player must desire the same outcome and use their skill and expertise to contribute to the team effort. The same is true in business, as each employee brings their education and abilities to the job in order to help deliver the business’s mission, whether it is a service or a product, to the consumer.
This synchrony cannot occur spontaneously or without coordination as within a group of people differing ideas on achieving the goal could widely vary. Instead, the company places one individual in the position of directing the efforts of a group toward the goal. In a sport, it is the captain of the team who takes the lead and responsibility for developing teamwork. Motivation plays a big part in this direction to stoke the desire of each participant to achieve goals.
What is motivation?
The ability to inspire others to use their talents and work with others to achieve a single goal can be a challenge. It means encouraging each member to present their optimal performance so that the group as a whole is high achieving. Motivation is the key to successfully harnessing the best efforts of everyone within the group.
To begin, it is necessary to define and clarify the goals desired with the team. Without understanding, full participation and success will not be possible. It is important to ensure that the goals are reachable and reasonable. In order to achieve the ultimate goal, smaller individual goals will likely need to be met. Allowing team members to play a part in the goal setting after clearly defining expectations will enhance the attitude of teamwork. Motivation can sometimes be as simple as allowing this type of participation in setting the goals, while the base responsibility remains with the leader.
Offering incentives for goals that are successfully met is a powerful motivation, and can be psychological as well as financial. Public recognition for a job well done is a simple incentive, but one that travels long roads. The feeling of being appreciated is a vital element in teamwork, for without appreciation, further efforts will certainly falter. A sense of importance within the group is also very meaningful.
Financial awards, while not always the best choice, should not be overlooked as incentives. Bonuses, pay raises, additional benefits, stock awards and more can be huge motivators for a team member to provide extra effort. Care should be taken when using financial incentives, as they may become expected forms of reward by team members.
Successfully harnessing the skills and abilities of a diverse group of people to achieve one singular goal is the epitome of teamwork. Motivation is often the key for encouraging team members to put their best foot forward toward achieving a mutual goal.
